A roadtrip! Even the worst econoboxes can be fun on a roadtrip*. The previous gen Ford Fusion was boring to look at, boring to drive, and boring to think about. Take it on a punishing tour of the American Southwest though, and it comes into it's own.
Are there better cars for a trip like this? Of course there are. Did the rental company have any of those cars available? Of course they did not.
*does not apply to Camry.

4 cylinder or V6?
My V6 Milan (same car in Mercury) really isn't that bad in the "sportiness/fun to drive" segment. I mean, it's no sports car and it's no 68 Montego. But it's not bad to drive (and there's an exit ramp near me that I enjoy 80 mph on)

I love that whole area. Me and a buddy found ourselves on top of a bluff near Monument Valley, looking down onto a scene like you've pictured there. Then dude steps to the edge for effect. Shoot, my palms started sweating now just thinking about it. Fifteen minutes later, we were barreling over the desert floor, fording streams and kicking up sand at high speed.

4 cylinder in rental spec. Not a bad car in any way, but I think the new Fusion is exceptional for a mid-size sedan. The Mercury skin looked way better on the older Fusion.
It handled everything I threw at it. That Monument Valley loop was one of the easier places it went.

Yeah the rental 4 cylinder isn't bad, just not as fan as it can be.
The V6 is a lot more fun, and if you get your hands on a Fusion Sport you'll forget it says fusion on the ass
